It was a quieter and smoother ride this morning along Lake Monona and around Monona Bay in Madison, WI. Prior to the ride, I checked the forecast for the next two weeks and was pleased to see no snow or bitter cold.
With this in mind, I started my early spring riding by swapping out the grinding studded winter tires for calm, quiet and lighter Panaracers with reflective sidewalls for early morning or late at night commutes.
I’ve been running Panaracers since I stopped in the LBS for a new commuter tire about 9 years ago and they recommended the Panaracers.
I’ve been noticing some skipping of gears recently. I checked over the drivetrain and my purchase record and it has been just under a year since I installed the chain and rear cassette, so it is time to swap in these two “consumables.”
I do this work on my own. I have a chain whip and lock ring. I also have a bike stand. I’ve accumulated these tools and some others taking on more and more repair jobs over the years. YouTube videos have helped immensely.
The new chain and cassette are on their way. I ordered one on eBay and one on Amazon. Within the next 10 days, I should have the new parts installed and ready for another year of pleasant commuting and riding.
