Attacking Colder Temps with Layers

On my bicycle commute to the lab, I was aware of the colder temperatures of 17F with wind chills a few degrees colder. There was scattered snow on the pavement.

Before my ride I went through my winter gear for the first time this year and picked out my thermal upper and lower base layers.

Over the top I wore joggers and uptop underneath next to the skin I wore a dry wick t-shirt for the needle to draw blood.

My ride wasn’t perfect. I didn’t think to unzip my outer layer the moment I don’t feel cold on the ride. Unzipping the outer layer, cools the inner layers and as a result prevents perspiration.

Even a less than perfect ride is well worth the effort.

For me, cycling continues to be a wonderful form of transport that rewards one with improved mental wellness, a unique view of the world and crucial biofeedback of increased dopamine, adrenaline, serotonin and endorphins.
