Riding in Less Than Ideal Conditions

I’ve been riding in temperatures in the 30s F and 40s F with higher than normal winds of 15 to 25 mph.

Riding on Starkweather Creek

Head winds are rarely enjoyable. The other day I was out during rain with gusts to 30 mph. On the way out there was a glorious headwind that pushed me along at record speeds.

But then it occurred to me that I would have to ride back against a headwind. I made it back but it took significantly longer with more work.

For temps in the 40s F and higher, I’ve been wearing  my Pearl Izumi cycling shorts, long-sleeve Climate Smart baselayer and sleeveless cycling jersey with pockets on top.

It might not sound like much, but when I am moving it feels right, ie, not cold at the start and not sweating throughout. Comfortable.

But for temperatures in the 30s F, I have been adding my Pearl Izumi tights under my cycling shorts. I also swap in a thermal elite top from Pearl Izumi.

Furthermore, I wear a pair of Blauer gloves to keep my hands nice and warm approaching 0 C and lower. Overall I’m feeling comfortable in this gear and enjoying the ride despite less than pleasant weather.
