Just after publishing my book Cycling and Prolifics in Life at 10,000 miles (per season), I was forced to downsize my home which was not all bad because the apartment I found had free heat, electricity and water entirely from clean energy sources.
Someone once said we are most happiest when we live more according to our values.
That being said, I recently acquired a hybrid car for rare longer distance trips. My riding to driving ratio has been about 1:1 over the last couple of years. When I was writing the book 4-5 years ago, however, the ratio had risen to 2:1 riding to driving.
To protect my two bicycles and my daughter’s bicycle from the harmful elements outdoors, I keep our bicycles in my one bedroom apartment. I value my bicycles as healthy transportation. And as a result, I use them daily so mitigating weather damage to my bicycles by keeping them indoors is a top priority.
I also have a central walk-in closet with a shelf that I use as a bench for making repairs, etc. I am now able to make most repairs or replacements on my bicycles. As I took on a repair, I acquired the tool(s) for the job and as a result have amassed a plethora of tools and knowledge. I have mainly relied on YouTube do it yourself videos or an occasional visit to a LBS mechanic.
