Riding to Improve Bicycling Infrastructure

For the summer, I will be riding in Love to Ride/League of American Bicyclists Challenge as I have for the last several years. But this year there is something new.

LtR has asked us to chart our rides based on the quality of the infrastructure and how we are feeling. Ideally this could help cities better improve the condition of bicycling infrastructure.

Bits and pieces of asphalt dangerously litter bike path

For example, I used “stressed” in red in my online entry to highlight my ride through a bike lane full of asphalt pellets and stones.

I also followed up on my own with streets, the appropriate city department here, to send out a sweeper to clean up the mess. After a week there was no change, so I sent a Second Notice. There are also uncomfortable, comfortable and enjoyable ratings.

I also positively rated as “enjoyable” my ride on Shore Drive on Monona Bay in Madison.

I like the Challenge for getting participants to work to improve the state of bicycling infrastructure that benefits all of us.
