Clearing Bike Racks at Schools

Cleared Bike Racks at School

I commute by bicycle year-round to intersections near schools. I am a crossing guard. So when I noticed all of the students’ bicycles parked in snow banks and locked up to parking signs,

Morning Commute in -9 F

I became concerned and wondered why the bike racks had not been cleared of snow. I decided to approach maintenance about it the next time I saw them.

So this morning when I got to my intersection, the maintenance person was riding a small tractor and clearing the sidewalks.

I greeted him and then asked if he would clear the bicycle racks because a number of students are riding to school and it is very harmful to the functioning of their bicycles to have to park in snow banks.

He said he would get to clearing the bike racks and did. As you can see, he was kind to clear the racks before school today so the students could lock up their bicycles in a safe and proper place.

There is even a unicyclist locked up in the foreground!

I am very proud of the hardy student cyclists because they have been braving windchill temps from -25 F to -10 F.
