Backing up your ride with contingency planning

Today I set up for my commute about an hour before sunrise when I rolled my bike on the apartment floor and noticed a puncture in the rear-tire inner tube.

I stopped and thought for a moment. I looked at my second bike a road bike that I have used in the past as a back-up. Time was running out, and I didn’t want to change into the clip shoes for the ride or ride a bicycle not up to code as there were no lights that are required by city ordinances.

To make a long story short I loaded up my hybrid car with all necessary equipment and made it to my commitment without rushing and safely to my destination.

On my departure, I witnessed a fair amount of traffic for around here during peak morning hours just after 8 AM.

This made me appreciate how blessed, fortunate and honored I am to commute with my bicycle in the lush, tranquil and safe from autos micro climate.

I acquired six Concord tubes at the nearest Walmart and made an expedited install in under 20 minutes.

Commuter after install with Concord

I acquired six tubes to last hopefully a couple of years as I go through approximately three tubes per year.

I logged 140 miles ridden so far this year for total mileage to check the distance of this new to me manufacturer of inner tubes. Curious to see how many miles Concords will last. If the good directions to replace a bicycle tube on the back of the package are any indication, they will roll a very long distance over our time.
