Riding Through Fears on The Wheel

Commuting Home on Frozen Lake Monona

This past Friday afternoon on my ride out to my commitment, I noticed a bicyclist riding on frozen Lake Monona.

This happens very rarely but with three weeks of below-zero temperatures this past month, this ice was more than thick enough.

I decided to ride home over the frozen bay and lake too. It was an amazing experience. In many places there was clear, black ice without snow. I could see down into the murky ice and water under my feet.

If I had to do it again, I would have turned on my GPS to record the ride and I also would have used an ice-spike tire on my rear wheel for better traction in deeper snow.
